Berlin Map

I have visited Berlin three times. The first trip, in 1986 with Jim, was to a city that remained divided by the wall. Berlin was one stop on our first trip to Europe that also included London, Paris, Copenhagen and Amsterdam. The lamentably small number of photos that resulted fom that visit seem to have mostly been taken on the east side of the city, which we visited on a day trip. In 1999, when Yvon and I visited the city as a first destination on a trip that took in Barcelona and Bilbao, it was a massive construction zone, the Potsdamer Platz was a forest of cranes, the Jewish Museum existed but was not yet open, and the dome in the Reichstag was brand new. In 2006 we went to Berlin together on our way to a larger stay in Istanbul. We were there for a large party, and tourism was less of a priority on that visit, though we managed to take more photos that ever, and had a side trip to Potsdam.

  • Berlin in 1986 (7 photos) - Sadly, only seven photos results from this trip, most of them from a one-day excursion to communist East Berlin.

  • Berlin in 1999 (43 photos) - Yvon and I went to Berlin as our first destination on our first trip together. At this time, Berlin was a city massively under construction, with cranes everywhere. The new Jewish Museum was just about to open, the new glassy dome on the Reichstag had just been completed, but you could still see the occasional Trabant on the streets.

  • Berlin and Potsdam in 2006 (112 photos) - The city was now largely rebuilt, and this gallery shows gleaming new buildings, the new Holocaust Memorial, the art gallery in the Hamburger Banhof, and other treats. The last twenty-four photos in this group are of a side trip that we made to Potsdam.
