Bilbao, in northern Spain, is a fairly small city that until it's Guggenheim museum was completed in 1997 was fairly obscure. Since 1997, however, the museum has singlehandedly transformed this city, in a way that many call the "Bilbao effect". Like many tourists, however, Yvon and I appeared in Bilbao, saw the museum, and just as quickly left. A few memories of our short time in Bilbao in 1999: I remember turning a corner and seeing a typical Spanish street, ending in a vista of the Guggenheim with hills behind dotted with cows contentedly chewing away, and breaking down in tears at the sheer genius of it all. I remember sitting in a bar that was mostly empty (called "El Sperma" - you figure it out) and chatting with the bartender who was quite charming, who was encouraging us to see more of the city than just the Guggenheim, but it was already too late for that. I remember walking in the halls of our hotel soaking wet with soap in my hair, looking for a working shower, anywhere in the hotel. It was the worst hotel I have stayed in anywhere, ever. Yvon, cleverly, had refused to shower in the first place. |
