Chicago Map

I have visited Chicago twice, - first in 2000 with Yvon, and again in 2023 with Andrew. The visit with Yvon allowed only a small amount of time to explore the city, and the weather was fairly grisly, with low clouds. I took only 26 photos, from a camera with film, and given what a picturesque city Chicago is, it was clearly not enough. I finally returned, on another too-brief visit, with Andrew. We got some sun, though also periods of cloud. It was fun to be there with Andrew, who was a great and adventurous travelling companion. Most of the photos below are from the 2023 visit.

  • Chicago River, Ogden Slip and Navy Pier (61 photos) - These photos are from the river, pier and slip. When Andrew and I set out to explore the city, we almost immediately found ourselves in the whirling beauty around the DuSable and Irv Kupcinet bridges, taking so many photos of the glorious buildings there from multiple eras. The gallery includes photos to the east, where the St. Regis and other contemporary buildings are found. It continues after we had explore much of the central city, with parks near where the Chicago River flows into Lake Michigan, and then a perusal of the Navy Pier. The gallery has a few night photos around the river, that we took on our way to Robert's Pizza. The last photo is a photo of the river taken from the "L" as I passed over.

  • Central Chicago (130 photos) - These photos are from a long walk through the central city, and mostly are photos of buildings. The gallery starts just south of the river, with some new buildings like Aqua. It continues through Millennium Park, to City Hall, the Rookery, the Willis Tower, and then heads back to the park. At the end, there is a visit to the massive Art Institute of Chicago, which actually happened the day after our walk through the city.

  • North of the Chicago River (84 photos) - Our hotel was just north of the Chicago River, on Ohio, and these photos are from that area. They include the area around our hotel, a bit further north where the Museum of Contemporary Art is located. On my own, I took the subway further north to Fullerton, and walked to the Lincoln Park Conservatory, then down through the Lincoln Park Zoo (I am not that fond of zoos so no photos of animals, but it was free and easy to pass through), and then I walked all the way back to the hotel.

  • West Chicago (21 photos) - Andrew and I went to a concert on 18th Street, this small group of photos is us taking the Pink Line to the locale, eating out, going to the concert, and going home.

  • Other Chicago (16 photos) - This small gallery is mostly subway shots that for one reason or another didn't fall easily into other galleries (other galleries do have some subway shots). From my earlier visit to Chicago, I had no real memory of the "L" and what it looked like. There was some charm to the rusty iron and wooden platforms of the elevated stations, but mostly I thought they were ugly and destructive of the streets they were on.

  • Visit to Chicago with Yvon in 2000 (26 photos) - Yvon and I went to Chicago for an event in 2000. As you can tell from these photos, the weather was horrible we didn't end up seeing much of the city. When I returned in 2023, though, and I revisited these photos, I was able to forgive them their grey pallor.
