Map of Denver
Denver, which I went to in April 2016,
was an experiment in taking a micro-trip, a very focused and quick weekend
getaway, chosen at the last minute to maximize the availability of good
weather. I flew out in the evening on Friday, and flew home in the
evening on Sunday. In the meantime, I walked for huge distances, went to a
rock concert, three museums, many restaurants, a potshop and the Denver
Wrangler. I considered the visit a huge success. I found Denver to be quite
a pleasant place to visit, I liked the "bent-grid" layout of the city, the
sense that they are reclaiming parts of the downtown, I liked the tourists
on the 16th Street Mall and the indigent hangers-on exerting their right to
be there. There were cherry blossoms. It all worked very well for me.

Colorado
Capitol and Area (92 photos) - The Colorado Capitol building
sits in a greenspace, with the Denver City and County Building just
across the very formal Civic Center Park. Just to the south of this area
is a collection of cultural institutions, including the Denver Art
Museum, the Denver Public Library, the Clyfford Still Museum and a
historical house. Nearby to the Capitol building is the Cathedral
Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. I was actually in this area four
times, in the evening on Friday, in bright sun twice on Saturday when I
took photos of the exteriors of the buildings and inside the library,
and on cloudy Sunday when I went into the Denver Art Gallery and the
Clyfford Still Museum.
-
Central
City (83 photos) - This includes the area around my hotel, the
very touristy 16th Street Mall, quite a few photos of tall buildings
around Broadway, the Colorado Convention Centre, the Theatre District (including interiors
of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House where I saw a Father John Misty concert).
-
Lower
Downtown, Union Station and area (67 photos) - This area is
closer to the South Platte River, and is marked by brick warehouse
buildings, former industrial buildings near Union Station, and quite a
lot of lowrise residential construction. There are a number of parks
along the river, and walkways along nearby Cherry Creek. This gallery
includes a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art.
-
Outer
Areas (64 photos) - I took a few walks outside the core. One was
just south of the core, on the Auraria campus, where there was nothing
to photograph except downtown in the distance. I ended up after
experimenting with a ride on the LRT to the 10th and Osage stop, and
walked back into town from there. Most of the photos, however, were
taken
along Colfax to City Park, where I scored some nice photos of the
downtown skyscrapers against a mountain background.
-
Transit
(25 photos) - This gallery includes shots of Denver
International Airport and Denver's LRT. There was a train to the
airport, and I have photos, but it was actually to open two weeks after
my visit, so I missed it! I also took a ride on the LRT. There was a
free shuttle bus that went back and forth along the 16th Street Mall,
which was very popular, and I have a few photos of that as well.
