    Guelph Map

I first went to Guelph at the end of
the summer of 1989. Having finished my practicum at the City of Ottawa Archives,
Gregg and I went to the city as a landing pad for an eventual move to
Toronto for Gregg (I was going back to Vancouver). I only remember being
there for a few days in 1989, but when I moved to Toronto in May, 1990, Gregg and I stayed with a
friend in Guelph for three weeks while we looked for an apartment in
Toronto. I don't recall exploring the city back then at all, though it
always seemed pleasant. I have always liked the name "Guelph", though I was
disappointed to learn that it has a meaning associated to royalty.

      Central
		Guelph (71 photos) -
This walk through central Guelph with Yvon starts at the Basilica which
dominates the skyline of the city, and which was open when we arrived.
We also spent some time in the Guelph Civic Museum next door, before
venturing out into the core of the city. Lots of photos of handsome
stone buildings here, though we learned in the museum of the damage done
to the city in the 1960's, when fine buildings surrounding St. George's
		Square were all demolished.

      Along
the Speed River (30 photos) -
Yvon and I took two walks centred on the river, here included in a single
gallery. One starts downtown and continues towards the Royal City Park,
and includes crossing the handsome Guelph Covered Bridge. The other was
initiated when we crossed the Heffernan Street Footbridge, and includes
some residential areas on the east side of the river on Arthur Street.

University of Guelph and area (43 photos)
		- In the south end of town, there is the Art Gallery of Guelph and an
accompanying sculpture garden, historic buildings for the University of
Guelph, the Stone Road Complex (an Ontario government office building),
and a large arboretum. This gallery captures two visits to this area,
one with Yvon during our tour of Guelph, and another about two weeks
later, for work, with my colleague Fran.

      Gregg in
		Guelph (2 photos)
      - Here are the only photos of I have of my 1989 stay in Guelph, they are
both of Gregg. I don't seem to have taken any photos during my stay in
		1990.
