Halifax Map
Halifax is the metropolis of Atlantic
Canada, almost twice the size of St. John's. A city with a lovely, dense,
livable core, when I visited in 2014 there was a lot of construction and the
city had a busy and prosperous feel to it. I have always enjoyed my stays
there, and the city has never failed to treat me well. This gallery includes
a number of photos from around Nova Scotia as well.

Halifax
and Nova Scotia in 1982 (34 photos) - The first destination on
the first trip I took by myself as an adult was to Halifax, in 1982. I
took the train to Halifax, and hitchhiked around the Maritimes. I left
May 17, returned to Ottawa July 5, and my total budget excluding train
fare was $485. Halifax was not only, then the first town that I took a
train to, but also the first town that I flew from (to Sydney, NS) and
to fly to (back from Sydney). These remain the only flights that were
ever paid for me by the Catholic Church. This group of photos, taken on
a cheap little instamatic camera, are more of Nova Scotia than of
Halifax. They start in Ottawa as I depart on the train, and there are
only a few in Halifax. See the next gallery down for three more photos
from this trip.

Three
Retakes from 1982 in 2014
- I took only five photos of Halifax proper during my 1982 stay there, and I
attempted to do re-takes on these while revisiting the city in 2014. A
photo of the bluenose, and one taken from the Angus L Macdonald bridge,
were too difficult to re-take, so here are the three that I took,
originals and retakes side by side.

Outside
the Lord Nelson Hotel in 1998 (2 photos)
- I was in Halifax for a week in 1998, to attend the conference of the
Association of Canadian Archivists. Though I had a fantastic time in the
city, the two photos that resulted are these, showing myself, Jayne and
Janice outside the Lord Nelson Hotel.

Quick
Tour of Halifax in 2014 (163 photos)
- In September 2014, Yvon and I did a quick visit to Halifax. These photos
represent a stay of less than 24 hours in the city, but it was a
beautiful and sunny day, so it was easy and tempting to snap away.
Included are cemeteries, parks, buildings, the new library just before
it opened, and skyline shots taken from the ferry to Dartmouth. We also
went to Point Pleasant Park before leaving town.

Other
Nova Scotia Photos (32 photos)
- A few other shots of Nova Scotia. Photos 1-23 are Pugwash, Springhill
and Amherst from a driving trip in May 2014, and photos 24-32 are a few
shots, almost all in Truro, from a brief stopover on our way back to New
Brunswick from Halifax.
