Hamilton Map
Hamilton, just west of Toronto, is
Canada's ninth largest city as measured by Census Metropolitan Area. It's an
industrial centre that has been bleeding jobs for a while and retains a
somewhat rough feel. But it's also a geographically complex city, with the
Niagara escarpment dividing the city into a lower northern section, and a
higher southern suburban section. The fabulously named "Coote's Paradise" is
a massive park around a big inlet off of Lake Ontario, and contains some of
the campuses of the sprawling Royal Botanical Gardens. Even the waterfront
in Hamilton has two lives - there is a huge industrial waterfront, largely
inaccessible, dominated by industry, and the waterfront of parks and trails
centred around Pier 8.

Walking Hamilton with Jim (121 photos) - When Jim visited one
weekend in 2013, we opted to do a walk through Hamilton as he had never been. We
later calculated that we had walked almost 30 kilometres that day.
Starting downtown, we walked a bit through the industrial north end,
down to the waterfront parks, back into downtown, over to Coote's
Paradise and finally to Dundas for supper. This large gallery is a good
sampling of central Hamilton.

Hamilton with Carolyn (55 photos)
- I visited my friend Carolyn in Hamilton is early 2013, and she was kind
enough to drive me around town on a blustery and chilly, but sunny, day.
Carolyn was eager to show off the city, and this takes us to the
waterfront, to City Hall, the lovely former Hamilton Waterworks, and
ends at Spring Gardens Road. This gallery overlaps to some extent with
the one above, and a small bit with the one below.

Royal
Botanical Gardens and Coote's Paradise (86 photos)
- This single gallery actually has photos from three separate visits to
Hamilton. The first eight photos are from a visit to the RBG with Rick
in 1994. Photos 9 through 73 are from a visit to the RBG with Yvon in
2013, and also includes some shots in Woodlands Cemetery and at
Easterbrook's Hot Dogs. Finally, in 2011 Yvon and I took a walk through
Coote's Paradise, which is show in photos 74 through 86.
-
Trocadero (2 photos)
- Two photos of a lovely visit to the Trocadero on Barton Street, with my
friend Carolyn. This restaurant opened on D-Day, and retains it's
family-run ambience and good food (especially the desserts). I went to
Hamilton with Carolyn one Friday night, we dined at the Troc, and then I
came home again.
-
November Visit (8 photos)
- Eight photos of a quick visit to Hamilton on a rainy November day in
2016, several of these are in the market where we had a coffee.
-
Visit
in 2019 (24 photos)
- Here are some photos from a visit in 2019, featuring the exterior of
Dundurn Castle and some views from the escarpment.
