My friend Mary and I have taken three vacations together: to Varadero and Havana in May, 1997; to Charlottetown and PEI in July, 1998; and to Iqaluit and beyond in 2007. We realized when were up in Nunuvut that all three trips have been to islands. Obviously, Madagascar is next!
We stayed in a resort in Varadero, relaxing by the sea in the beautiful waters of Cuba. But most of the photos are from a side trip to Havana, where we walked around the city a great deal. There we found a beautiful and graceful old town on hard times. It was remarkable to see so many art deco buildings in one place, and in such a state of disrepair. I understand it has been fixed up since. Many of these photos were very hard to scan, some have been scanned three times in an effort to make them more legible and retain the details, but for some reason, it has been very difficult with this set. Please forgive the quality of the images. On the other hand, cameras that took panoramic shots were popular at the time, so many of these are oversized.
