Iqaluit Map

My good friend Mary and I went up to Iqaluit for a week in 2007, visiting our mutual friend Melanie (and her large network of family and friends) up on Baffin Island. We were there in October, on Melanie's suggestion, which gave us a chance to experience the town in brilliant, sunny and warm weather, and also to have a mini-tempest, and see the beginnings of their snowy season. It worked out just fantastically. We also took an overnighter "up island" to Pangnirtung.

  • Town views (45 photos) - General views of Iqaluit, in sunny weather and during a snow sqall, including the famed Road to Nowhere, the cemetery, and various views. Large variety of images, including animals, signage, vehicles, closeups of frozen plants, etc. The first photo is a panorama from the breakwater.

  • Institutions (48 photos) - Photos of major institutions in the town, including the Legislative Assembly, schools and government buildings, the airport, town hall, fire stations, community centres and museums.

  • Iqaluit houses (30 photos) - I was surprised by the housing in Iqaluit. Certainly unique, some were quite beautiful, while others were on the unfortunate side. These photos capture some of my favourites, but also focus on some of the substandard housing that is clearly evident throughout the town.

  • Commercial Iqaluit (20 photos) - Commerce in Iqaluit is not what it is elsewhere. Apart from a very few stores with a high public profile, you can walk right by and not notice that there is a "store" inside a building. And, compared with the rest of Canada, a single store must serve multiple purposes, the result of which can be quite amusing for us unused to it.

  • Water views (38 photos) - I was fascinated by the water in Iqaluit - how different Frobisher Bay looked at different times of day, and in different light conditions. The enormous tides rolling out leaving moonlike fields of rock and kilometres of walking into the sea were fascinating, and the way the town met the water, these were all fascinations.

  • Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park Reserve (32 photos) - Melanie took Mary and I to this park on the edge of Iqaluit (past the airport) on a gorgeous sunny and warm day, and we hiked through the park, admiring the finely wrought ice sheets, the small waterfalls, and the lake with skaters.

  • Apex (22 photos) - Apex is the original townsite for Iqaluit, now it is Iqaluit's only suburb, existing a short drive away up the coast. Now known for the White Stripes video "You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do as You're Told)" which was filmed here. These show images of the Rotary Park, the old Hudson's Bay buildings, and the townsite.

  • Events in Iqaluit (46 photos) - Mary and I were fortunate to be well hosted in Iqaluit, and so we partook in the many events the town had to offer, from a lunch at the Francophone Centre, Dinners, a party at Melanie's, a farmer's market, the opening of the new hospital wing, and of course, the arrival of the sealift and helping to unpack crates. Also some photos of us just hanging out.

  • Pangnirtung (83 photos) - Mary and I spent about 24 hours in Pangnirtung, leaving from Iqaluit on Kenn Borek air in the middle of a snow squall, but arriving in Pang on a rare warm and sunny day.
