    Los
    Angeles Map

I went to LA for the second time in
2006, and visited a bit with my friend Janice, who moved down there a few
years ago. Yvon then joined me, and together we explored the city a bit
more. Though LA has a bad reputation among urban enthusiasts, I was
pleasantly surprised at how walkable many neighbourhoods were (once you'd
driven there, generally) and how much I actually like the city. Janice said
it best, it's a very random place, a button store sitting next to a car
dealership sitting next to an office tower, sitting next to an industrial
building. Yet, it has it's moments of exuberance, particularly in the
optimistic and sunny architecture that abounds.

      Downtown LA (59 photos)
      - How unfortunate for LA that it's downtown is far from the coast, at the
intersection of nothing and nothing. Lots of great buildings here, and so
much promise, but when you look at the floors above the street level, most
seem to be largely abandoned. Photos here of skyscrapers, the Walt Disney
Concert Hall, the CalTrans building, Pershing Square, and a few transit
      shots.

      Other Los Angeles (76 photos)
      - Photos of various other parts of the city, and buildings that I sought
out to visit. Includes views of the Fairfax area where I stayed with my
friend Janice, a drive around Mulholland Drive, the Los Angeles County
Museum of Art, churches and subway shots. No beach pics.

      Getty Center (28 photos)
      - Yvon and I went to the Getty Center, which is more interesting for being
a modernist complex of buildings, than for the art it contains. Who,
though, could complain about such a thoughtful and coherent assemblage of
      buildings?
