Lyon Map

Lyon was the first city that Yvon and I visited in September of 2019. We found it very pretty and entertaining and walked extensively through it's complex streets, crossing its two rivers so frequently that we lost track of where we were half the time. I also enjoyed blocks and blocks of modern architecture in the entirely-rebuilt Confluences area, where the Saône and the Rhône meet at a sparkling new museum. Too much of the city was under construction when we were there, and we had difficulties with our poorly-chosen hotel, but these didn't stop us from enjoying the city.

  • Vieux Lyon (99 photos) - Lyon's old city is just a few streets that are sandwiched between the Saône River and the hills of Fourvière. This gallery is a wandering tour of Vieux Lyon and the area in between the Saône and the Rhône rivers, which includes the Hôtel de Ville and some major churches. Also lots of charming pedestrian bridges over the rivers.

  • Fourvière (60 photos) - We took the funicular up from the old city to the massive Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière. This massively ornate building looks over Lyon and can be seen from almost anywhere. Lookouts offer fantastic views of the city. We also visited the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière, and a cemetery.

  • Confluences (73 photos)This area, which is south of the main city centre, was formerly industrial and lies between the Saône and the Rhône rivers. This gallery has a lot of hyper-modern buildings, though I felt as if I was fighting the light all the way through. There are also a few shots of the not-very-pleasant area around our hotels.

  • Parc de la Tête d'Or (66 photos) - Just north of the central city is a very large and pretty park that includes greenhouses, a botanical garden, a small zoo, and a lake

  • Other Lyon (28 photos) - This is a bit of stuff that didn't go anywhere, including a few shots of the business centre of Lyon around the Part Dieu station, and some shots of the airport and Bob and Yvon in transit.
