Montreal Map

Sometimes the places we love best we overlook in some obvious way. Though I have visited Montreal often, feeling almost as if I have lived there at certain points in my life, I have never really made a conscious effort to photograph the city as I have done with less visited (and less loved) locales. So many of these photos are a little hit and miss, reflecting more or what I might have happened to see at the time, rather than providing a real overview of the city.

  • Montreal for Aura in 2018 (245 photos) - Yvon and I visited in the later winter, mostly to see the Aura light show at the Basilica, but we wandered the city extensively on Saturday, started at the Atwater Market, to downtown, through Old Montreal and a bit of the waterfront, to the Village. On Sunday we went to the Biodome and the Insectarium.

  • Wandering in 2010 (145 photos) - Walking through Montreal in the summer of 2010, a few big walks. One started at the Atwater Market, continued along the Lachine Canal, past Habitat 67 and into the Parc Jean Drapeau, then picking up again at the Cité du Multimédia and downtown. The other walk starts at the Grande Bibliothèque, goes up St Denis into the Plateau, and ends at the Musée de Beaux Arts.

  • From the Champlain Bridge (7 photos) - A quick drive through the city without stopping, on our return from New Brunswick in 2008. Interesting cloud pattern hovering over the city.

  • Winter visit to Montreal (88 photos) - Yvon was working in Montreal for a few days in 2005, so I tagged along. I went out in the wonderfully sunny weather, snapping photos of whatever I could find that was interesting.

  • Visit to Montreal for Aura show (245 photos) - Yvon and I went to Montreal to see the Aura show at the Basilica, and quite a few photos resulted. This gallery starts at the Atwater Market and heads west on St. Catherine and then into Old Montreal and the port. There are some photos of the show towards the middle of the gallery. On Day Two we went to the Biodome and then the Jardin Botanique, where we saw a lot of butterflies.

  • Social photos in 2002 (14 photos) - In 2002, Yvon and I went down in summertime to see one of the fireworks displays, and visited friends there. These few photos show only bits of that trip, and are more social than sightseeing.

  • Long Distance Relationship (60 photos) - In 1999 and 2000, Yvon lived in Montreal and we had a long-distance relationship. At that point, I was in Montreal every second weekend, and occasionally for longer periods of time. These photos are an amalgam of all kinds of visits and events in Montreal. This includes:

  • A driving trip in the Laurentians at Easter in 1999

  • A summer week I spent in Montreal to celebrate Yvon's birthday and our first anniversary

  • Going to Divers-Cité, Montreal's gay pride (Yvon was in New Brunswick at this time)

  • The first Christmas Yvon and I spent together

  • Rick coming for a visit in January, 2000, during which we went to the Canadian Centre for Architecture

  • Helping Yvon move between apartments in March, 2000

  • A walk with Yvon in April, 2000, from his apartment along the Lachine Canal to old Montreal and the Pointe-à-Callière museum

  • Subway shots from the "Babineau" metro station

  • A walk in June, 2000, where Yvon and I walked over the mountain and visited cemeteries on our way to the Oratoire to hear a concert

  • A quiet Canada Day in Montreal where we visited Parc Angrignon

  • A visit from Camille and Carmella on their way home from a big trip

  • A visit from Mary where we went to old Montreal
