    New Orleans
    Map

Poor New Orleans. Though this trip
predates the great deluge (Yvon and I visited in October, 2004), the city
was already in many ways a sad and defeated place. Though it puts its
best side forward for tourists, New Orleans is one of America's most failed
cities - massive poverty, an enormous crime rate, and a corrupt political
scene mean that for the average person, the city is a nightmare to live in.
Once the major city of the south, it's now something of a backwater. Still,
as an outpost of history and liquor and sin in the US bible belt, it can be
    entertaining.

      The
French Quarter and Downtown (88 photos) - These photos were taken
in the heart of New Orleans, and include Jackson Square, the waterfront,
various buildings in the French Quarter, the St. Louis Cemetery, and the
Contemporary Arts Centre, along with the usual tall buildings.

      The
Marigny (17 photos) - This neighbourhood to the east of the French
Quarter was where our guest house was. It had seen better days and there
seemed to be a lot of empty lots and buildings about, but it still had
charm. These are mostly houses of photos and businesses in the area, but
there are also some of the New Orleans Centre for the Creative Arts, a
      school.

      The
Garden District and Audobon Park (26 photos) - This neighbourhood
to the west of the French Quarter is known for its stately homes, and it
      is quite beautiful.

Algiers Point (10 photos) - Yvon and I took a ferry across the
river to this small community and walked around a bit, stumbling onto a
      church fair in the process.
