Providence Map

Yvon and I went to Providence in April 2017. We had a truly enjoyable stay in the city, which is very picturesque. We enjoyed walking the hilly streets, and then retracing our steps quite a bit the second day, when museums and other sites were open and the weather was sunnier. Everything seemed to go our way in Providence, the weather, our hotel was lovely, our meals were good and we enjoyed success in everything that we tried doing. It was a magical stay in this pretty city.

  • Central Providence (74 photos) - This gallery mimics our first steps through Providence: it starts at the Rhode Island State House, cuts through the Waterplace Park, up to Burnside Park, the historical heart of Providence, and then includes many photos of the city's downtown core, including some from alongside the Providence River.

  • Benefit Street and area (95 photos) - Benefit Street, on the east side of the Providence River, is a historical area that houses the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum of Art, Providence's major art gallery, the Providence Athanaeum, and the First Baptist Church. These photos show those cultural sites, and also include waterside views from Water Street and other historic buildings.

  • College Hill (63 photos) - Further up the hill from Benefit Street is an area called College Hill, home to Brown University. This gallery starts at Prospect Terrace, a park that has some great views of the city. There are quite a few photos of the beautiful old houses that mark the area. Finally, there are photos of the campus of Brown University with some buildings from the Rhode Island School of Design, including the David Winton Bell Gallery, the Woods-Gerry Gallery and the Cohen Gallery.

  • Downcity (70 photos) - This gallery includes photos from south of the main downtown, where our hotel was located. The streets here were full of historical buildings, lowrise, and though the area clearly had a lot of damage from urban renewal, there was still elegance in many of the older buildings.

  • Outer Areas (36 photos) - We drove around a bit outside the central city, so a few photos of this. This includes Wickendon Street where we went to a few antique stores, India Point, Blackstone Park, a flag store in East Providence, the Swan Point Cemetery, and Federal Hill, where we ate out one evening.

  • Pawtucket (22 photos) - Pawtucket is just up the road from Providence, not far away but has a historical downtown. We noticed several interesting buildings on our way into Providence, so we returned with the car to take a walk around. The city has a number of historical buildings which are interesting and beautiful, and a massive Art-Deco City Hall.
