Puerto Vallarta Map

I don't normally spend time at resort destinations, but in 1995 my friend Chris won an all expenses week in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and we went together. I was suspicious and kept waiting for the mandatory session on the time-share, but none of that happened and our hotel, a bit out of town, was very lovely. Chris and I spent some time on beaches, but also walked the town extensively and took a few side trips.

  • Puerto Vallarta (21 photos) - These photos show us at our hotel, in and around town, and at the ruins in Mismaloya of the site where the movie Night of the Iquana was filmed.

  • Outside the City (8 photos) - Chris and I got the idea of renting a car and driving out of town to explore the area a bit. Not necessarily the best idea, there was really only one highway out, it was quite small and twisty but nonetheless bears the burden of being the route to bring everything in and out of the city. We found ourselves stuck between an endless array of trucks moving a high speed, with very few exits from the highway. When we hit a dusty road maybe half an hour out of town, we quickly turned off and drove into a village in the hills. A child, on seeing us get out of our car, ran screaming "Los Americanos! Los Americanos!". I guess El Tonino is not a place many tourists go to.
