Richmond Map

I went to Richmond, Virginia in August 2018. On the first day I went to the Botanical Garden and the Museum of Fine Arts, and while all of that was fine, I didn't come to enjoy the city much until that evening out when I had a great meal featuring catfish. Early in the morning I started walking alongside the complex shoreline of the James River and the industrial canals that line the waterfront, and this was beautiful. The river forms a rapids at Richmond, which more or less accounts for the city's location. I was fascinated by the floodwall that winds along the river, and pleased with the many pedestrian paths and bridges that provide access to the water.

  • Downtown and Capitol District (76 photos) - This gallery starts at the Virginia State Capitol, and then moves to nearby City Hall and other buildings along Broad Street. It moves through the city's taller buildings in short order. At the end, there are a bunch of photos from further west along Broad, where I dined out on Saturday night.

  • James River and Canals (86 photos) - This gallery starts in the early morning south of the James River, along the Manchester Floodwall Walk, with some views of the downtown across the river. Crossing the river on a pedestrian bridge to the Tredegar Iron Works, the gallery follows the canals back to 14th street. A second group of photos resulted from a crossing over to Belle Isle. A third small group are on the Kanawha Canal near Dock Street, that I took just before leaving town. The last group are a few photos from that charmingly named Great Shiplock Park.

  • Shockoe Bottom and Church Hill (42 photos) - These two neighbourhoods are east of downtown. Shockoe Bottom is a former industrial area along the canal, while Church Hill is just north of that, and up a great hill. These photos start at the charming Main Street Railway Station, show some of the complex bridges and overpasses near the station, and then through the neighbourhood with former industrial buildings. Church Hill is mostly represented with residential and religious buildings.

  • Museum District and Fan District (84 photos) - This gallery includes everything west of the downtown. It starts at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, has some outside shots of other museums in that area, continues with residential photos of the Fan District, and travels towards downtown to Monroe Park and the lovely theatre and cathedral that border the park. There are a few shots only of Virginia Commonwealth University, and then the gallery dekes south to the Hollywood Cemetery and the neighbourhood just outside that where I wandered into a rock concert. There are a few shots of Monument Avenue and the Science Centre to round out the gallery.

  • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (38 photos) - The botanical garden was my first stop in Richmond, and I found it pretty enough. The large conservatory had a butterfly room, which was my fourth of the year (After Montreal, Niagara Falls and Indianapolis).
