Saint John Map

I first went to Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1982 as part of my "Hitching through the Maritimes" tour. I didn't return until 1998, when I met Yvon, but since then have been back a few times, mostly for social visits or weddings, rather than to see the city. Saint John is a rugged, old town, with a small core of historical buildings sprinkled with modern additions. After the core, the city has a sort of random feel, and in fact is populated in a pattern that looks more like spattered paint than a cohesive city. Some of this is bad planning, and some of it is due to the ruggedness and rockyness of the landscape.

  • Saint John and SW NB in 1982 (13 photos) - My first real trip as an adult was to the Maritimes. I took the train to Halifax, and hitchhiked around for about seven weeks, including into Saint John and New Brunswick generally. The first seven of these photos are of the city itself, and the rest are of other nearby destinations, mostly St-Andrews-by-the-Sea, and one of me on my way to Fredericton after leaving Saint John.

  • Visiting Yvon in Saint John in 1998 (11 photos) - When I first met Yvon, he was living in Saint John, having started with Air Canada only the year before. This small gallery is the result of a visit to him in the fall of 1998. Seven photos are of the city proper, but the last four are on the Fundy shore during a drive that we took.

  • Saint John in 2010 (57 photos) - When Yvon and I went to his niece Yvette's wedding in 2010, we took a brief walk around the centre of the city in the startling blue weather, and I took some reasonable photos of the old core of Saint John.

  • Saint John and Southern New Brunswick in 2013 (18 photos) - These photos are mostly of a driving trip with Yvon and his mom across southern NB on our way to Saint John, where we visited with Felix. The first 14 photos are of the trip, then there are four photos taken as we were leaving Saint John on our return, including two nice skyline shots of the city.

  • West side of Saint John and the Reversing Falls (19 photos) - In 2015, we dropped by the city so that I could catch a flight back to Toronto as the Moncton flights were full. We had a bit of time, so I asked Yvon to show me the west side and the Reversing Falls, and these photos of the falls, some views, and houses were the result.

  • Saint John in 2017 (108 photos) - In 2017, while Yvon was going to a memorial service for his cousin, I had a walk around the central city and took quite a few photos under clear skies. I tried not to overlap too much with previous galleries, though the area covered is quite similar to the gallery that resulted from the 2010 visit.
