Salvador Map

When Jim and I said we were going to Salvador during our stay in Brazil in 2007, Brazilians generally responded by saying, "you'll love Salvador". We didn't especially, because of all the cities we visited it had by far the most dangerous feel about it, which tended to restrict your wanderings to tourist areas. And in the tourist areas, one was besieged by a variety of hucsters trying to tie ribbons around your wrist and the like. There were these women in large hooped skirts that we learned were particularly to be avoided. Nonetheless, it is a picturesque and very old city, as these photos will show.

  • Pelhourino (101 photos) - Views of Curitiba and buildings in the city, both old and new, including the Museu Oscar Neimeyer. These are generally arranged from near our hotel, or the south, towards the north, and reflect a long walk we took through the city. Also, three photos on our way out of town that didn't belong anywhere.

  • Salvador Walk (89 photos) - We walked from our guest house along the watery beaches of Barra, and north all the way to Pelhourino, the old city. These photos show various Praças along that walk, people shopping, beach scenes and the English Cemetery.
