When Jim and I said we were going to Salvador during our stay in Brazil in 2007, Brazilians generally responded by saying, "you'll love Salvador". We didn't especially, because of all the cities we visited it had by far the most dangerous feel about it, which tended to restrict your wanderings to tourist areas. And in the tourist areas, one was besieged by a variety of hucsters trying to tie ribbons around your wrist and the like. There were these women in large hooped skirts that we learned were particularly to be avoided. Nonetheless, it is a picturesque and very old city, as these photos will show. |
