    Sao Paulo Map

Jim and I arrived in Sao Paulo at the
beginning of our Brazilian trip in 2007, went to our
very noisy hotel room, and then spent days wandering the city. Sao Paulo suffers
from an almost total absence of a natural setting (what little they had has
been buried) and also suffers from being so very large - 17,000,000 people
crammed into one city, all of them apparently trying to travel to some other
part of the metropolis. Yet, there is much to enjoy: its graceful parks,
intriguing architecture, and sense of purpose. It certainly seemed quite
safe to us, had a great transit system, and was a convenient and easy place
    to be.

      Centro
      Sao Paulo (85 photos) -
Includes buildings old and new, a few parks, fountains, and spectacular
      views of the city.
      -

      Jardim
da Luz and Hiegienopolis (72 photos)
      - Contains photos of the park and art that is strewn throughout it, two
art galleries nearby, a Museum of religious objects, a whore, and our walk
      to the neighbourhood of Hiegienopolis.
      -

      Mercado and area (29 photos)
      - Photos of the busy commercial streets near the Mercado (Market), of the
market itself, and of the rough neighbourhood surrounding it.
      -

      Avenida Paulista (35 photos)
      - Avenida Paulista is one of Sao Paulo's major streets. This contains
photos of the street, a park on the street, and shots of our fairly
      horrible hotel nearby.
      -

      Jardim
      and Ibirapuera Park (64 photos)
      - The Jardim Area is just south of Avenida Paulista, and is one of the
richer areas of Sao Paulo. Ibirapuera Park is at the south of Jardim, and
is large and beautiful, and contains quite a few crazy modern buildings.
Many photos of interesting thin residential buildings.

      South
      End Building Hunt (66 photos)
      - I left Jim alone one day and travelled the south end of the city looking
for particular buildings, with some success. These photos are almost
exclusively building oriented, and mostly newer models.

      Latin
      American Memorial (19 photos)
      - In the north end of the city, architect Oscar Neimeyer designed a square
surrounded by buildings, with a ramp traversing a busy street. A bit
bleak, especially on a hot day, but worth looking at.

      Transit shots (18 photos)
      - Subways, people in subways, subway stations. Includes a really neat shot
of an amazing artwork that has to be seen to be believed!
