    Shanghai Map

Yvon and I spent some time in Shanghai
in between London and Auckland, on our 2001 "around-the-world" trip.
We found a massive and chaotic city, already rapidly changing (which was to
continue), with massive euphoric skyscrapers poking up through the soot.
Though Yvon remembers mostly that we were tailed for some distance by some
kind of police (until they realized we understood that we were being
followed), in fact the experience of being there was quite a fascinating one
    of huge contrasts.

      Older
      Shanghai (25 photos)
      - Much of older Shanghai was in the process of being obliterated when we
were there, and this has continued. However, it is unlikely that they will
ever be able to rid the city of its grunge and disorganization completely
      - it will creep back into the city in unexpected ways. These photos
show some of the tradtional architecture (particularly in the beautiful
Yuyuan Garden), but also show the messy, undeveloped side of the city.

      Newer
      Shanghai (28 photos)
      - Starting with photos of the astonishing exhibits at the Shanghai Urban
Development Institute, this group of photos moves on to Renmin Park and
      then into the Pudong District.

      Miscellaneous (7 photos)
      - A few subway shots, Yvon eating some street food, Bob reading the
newspaper, the view from our hotel room, and a really strange "gay" bar.
