    St. John's
	Map

    When Yvon and I
were first going out, and he asked me if there was somewhere he could take
me on a pass with Air Canada for my birthday, I chose St. John's without
hesitation. So we visited in 1999, and then I
returned in 2002 to give a course. I went back in 2018 for a more fulsome
photography expedition to the city, and these photos are mostly from that
last visit. St. John's is a remarkable city, perched out at the extreme
eastern end of the North American continent, a city that has retained it's
honest beauty, and a wonder to visit.

		Central
		St. John's (128 photos)
		- This gallery covers the central city of St. John's.
It starts at the harbour, with various views of the ships and harbour
from different vantage points. It moves into the city, starting at the
waterfront hotel where I stayed, and then criss crosses the city, moving
gradually up the hill that ascends from the harbour, ending at the
Basilica and then The Rooms, the provinces art gallery, archives and
		museum.

		Colourful St. John's (27 photos)
		- The city is known for it's "jellybean" rows of
brightly painted houses. This includes a bunch of these from the central
		city.

		Signal
		Hill (50 photos)
		- I went up to the Signal Hill National HIstoric Site
twice, once in sunny weather but with a fog rolling in, which changed
the landscape every few minutes and it was terrifically beautiful, and
then in the morning at 5:00 am to see the sunrise, which was also
terrifically beautiful. I walked on some of the trails after the
sunrise, awaiting the time when my hotel would set out their breakfast
		on my return.

		The
		Battery (19 photos)
		- The Battery is a small neighbourhood that sits on
the sides of Signal Hill, the houses scattered across the hillside, not
all even accessible by the narrow streets. I was here in the very early
morning, after having seen the sun rise over Signal Hill, and the light
had not yet reached the houses in the Battery, lending these photos a
blueish cool tinge that I think is nonethelss sort of pretty. More
photos of the Battery are available in ....

		Pippy
		and Memorial (23 photos)
		- These photos show a few things in the northern
quarters of the city, including Confederation Building, a small bit of
Pippy Park, a brief walkaround on the campus of Memorial University, and
		a photo of the airport.

		Out of
		the City (46 photos)
		- I took a drive out of town. The first few of these
photos are pretty much still of St. John's, because I drove along
Southside Road on the opposite side of the Harbour and so took some
photos of the city across the way, including some nice ones of The
Battery. After that, I visited Fort Amherst, the Cape Spear Lighthouse
National Historic Site (furthest point east in N. America), Petty
		Harbour, and Bay Bulls.

		St.
		John's in 1999 (13 photos)
		- Yvon offered me a "pass" for my birthday in the
days of our early relationship, and I chose St. John's without
hesitation. Here are a few grainy grey photos of that visit, that I
		remember well.

		St.
		John's in 2002 (15 photos)
		- My second visit to St. John's happened in February
		2002 when I gave a workshop.
