Tallinn Map

Tallinn was the third city visited on a trip in the summer of 2017 with Jim, after Helsinki. We were not there long, but enjoyed the walls and turrets of the old city, which had beautiful and informative information in glass on many of the buildings. I wondered what kind of records they had to know the owners and purpose of a building from 1388. Up and down a couple of steeples and towers, and a few museums. I also took a fairly long walk through Tallinn outside the old city, including a fairly terrible high-rise district, and into some pleasant parks and a cemetery.

  • Old Town of Tallinn (162 photos) - This rather wandering gallery is a bit scattered. It starts at the Viru Gate, moves around to the Soprus Theatre, and comes in a roundabout way to Surgiildi Square and Town Hall Square, the heat of the old city. Up the tower of Town Hall Square for the view, then continues in the streets around the square and veers off to the north east part of the old city, including St. Olaf's Church, Margaret's Garden and the Broken Line monument. Then it sort of starts again randomly, at Harju Street Park and St. Nicolas' Church and Museum, to the Adamson-Ericu gallery, the Stone Carving Museum, to St. Mary's Cathedral for more views, and ends at the Toompark.

  • Talinn Outside the Walled City (97 photos)  - This gallery has everything outside of the historic old city, in three different areas. One of them is Rotermanni, where our hotel was located, an industrial area being converted to commercial uses, so there is a mix of modern buildings alongside the old stone warehouses. Most of the photos are from a longish walk that took me through Tallinn's appalling commercial district of towers, through a few parks and a large cemetery, and a large walk back to our hotel area. The last group are from a short excursion to the south of the walled city, which primarily features the National Library and the exterior of the Occupation Museum.

  • Transit Photos (11 photos)  - A small number of photos, two of Tallinn's trams, and the other nine are interior shots on the ferry ride from Helsinki to Tallinn, or on the return trip.
