    Turku Map

I had no especially good reason to go
to Turku, Finland, with Jim in 2017. Jim was there because it was the
starting point for a bike tour around the Turku Archipelago, and I really went
along for the journey to spend time in a smaller Nordic city. I was
surprised by how much I enjoyed the art galleries, and we were both taken
aback by the lively scene along Turku's Aura river, where summer evenings are
spent with bottles of wine along the riverbank. For a smaller city, it
felt like there was a lot going on here.

		Turku (110 photos)
		- This gallery has most of the photos of the city. It starts at our
hotel and then Market Square, follows Yliopistonkatu where we first
walked in search of dinner, and then has a kind of random assortment of
mostly commercial buildings from the bus station down to the market and
other buildings closer to the Aura River. There are quite a few photos
along the riverbank, which seemed like the heart of the city and which
was having a kind of food festival while we were there. From the river,
the gallery continues to the Cathedral and then follows a kind of
self-guided architecture tour that I took, which took me through the
University of Turku, and then it concludes at Vartiovuori Park.

		Two Art
		Museums (30 photos)
		- I went to two museums during my stay in town. The Turku Art Museum is
a large traditional museum on a hillside overlooking the town, and they
had exhibits of the works of Robert Doisneau and Emma Helle. I was
thrilled with Jacob Hashimoto’s marvelous sailboats and other works at the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of
		Art, alongside the river.

		Train Bus
		and Airplane Photos (13 photos)
		- These are photos of the train ride from Helsinki, the bus ride back to
the airport, and a few photos of Greenland's coast from the plane on the
		way home.
