Map of Vimy and Northern France

I went to Vimy two years in a row. In August, 2007, I was there with my friend Marcy, in brilliant sunny weather. Marcy and I also stopped overnight at a charming town called Le Cateau-Cambrésis, home to Matisse and to a museum of his work. Just after arriving in France, we also found ourselves intermingled with a local fair in the walled town of Le Quesnoy.

I returned to Vimy in dreadful cold rain in April, 2008, with Yvon and his Mom. We also spent two days driving around the Flanders region of France.

Near Vimy with Marcy in 2007 ...

  • Le Quesnoy (28 photos) - We stumbled into this walled town just after crossing the border from Belgium, and found ourselves in the middle of a rural fair.

  • Le Cateau-Cambrésis (56 photos) - This charming town was the home of Matisse (he left early). We stayed overnight and spent Sunday morning at the Matisse Museum and walking through the town.

In Flanders with Yvon and Yvette in 2008 ...

  • Flanders (87 photos) - After Vimy, we had lunch in Lens, we dropped in on Bailleul and saw La Maison de la Dentelle (a Lace School), we stayed overnight in a town called Hazebrouck, visited a charming hill-city called Cassel, Yvon drove through the middle of a rural fair in Arnèke, we looking at flowers in Calais, and generally saw lots of rural France by driving on back routes.
