Zurich Map

I had a week off in February 2019 and was seeking destinations that offered some sun with seats available on flights, and to my surprise that combination brought me to Zurich and Milan. Zurich I found smaller than expected, but very pretty and manicured. There were lots of unexpected stairways and passageways in this hilly town, and lots of beautiful public spaces along the water. During the two days I was there, people were out in abundance in the sunny weather. Where were the bankers? For a finance town, it seemed pretty low key, not many towers around, people seemed in no hurry.

  • Central Zurich (109 photos) - This gallery starts at the Limmat River which runs through central Zurich. There are perhaps too many photos of the river, but my it was pretty. I ascended on the east side of the river to the University, which is apparently called ETH Zurich. Then down again, through the central street of Zurich (Banhofstrasse) and some of the many squares and parks in the central city. I visited a number of churches during my walks, and took photos of commercial buildings that were old and new. This also includes Zurich's old town. The gallery ends with views of Lake Zurich.

  • South East (95 photos) - This gallery starts at the Kunsthaus (Art Gallery) and includes a long walk I took to the south east of the central area, along the Zurichsee. It also includes walks along the Lake Zurich, the rather lovely and hidden away Stadelhofen Railway Station, an unusual office building, and the Botanical Garden at the University of Zurich area.

  • North (59 photos) -  My hotel was just north of the central railway station, and this gallery starts at the station, continues to my hotel and everything north of the city. This includes a few photos on the train and the airport thrown in at the train station. Continues through the Landesmuseum, views along the river, and into the Lowenbrau District, with art galleries and modern buildings built around an old industrial site.

  • West (74 photos) - This is really pretty much still in the central city, but towards the western side of it. It starts at the trainyards leading into the Hauptbanhof, and some modern buildings around those, continues through a slight sketchy neighbourhood where I visited a park, and then heads to a modern art gallery that I very much enjoyed, the Haus Konstruktiv. This gallery includes views of the Sihl River and the canal-like Schanzengraben, which is a remnant of the old fortifications of the city. There is also a small Botanical Garden that I visited here.
